Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Dead bodies of the five convicted killers of independence architect Sheikh Mujibur Rahman have been sent to their respective hometowns Thursday morning.

Earlier, five ambulances brought in to the Dhaka Central Jail to collect the bodies after execution and take those to their respective villages.

The ambulances were escorted by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police.

Meanwhile, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan was buried at his ancestral village Gapinathpur in Kashba upazila of Brahmanbaria district, according to reports.

The bodies of Syed Farooq Rahman and Bazlul Huda reached at their home villages in Badalgachi of Naogaon district and in Alamdanga of Chuadanga district respectively.

The bodies of AKM Mohiuddin and Mohiuddin Ahmed are on way to their home villages at Rangabari in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district and Kalapara of Patuakhali respectively.

The five condemned killers were hanged early Thursday at Dhaka Central Jail amid tight security.

The execution was carried out nearly 15 hours after the country’s apex court dismissed the review petitions filed by the convicts against the court’s verdict confirming their death sentence.

Three-tier security measures were taken in and around the jail compound ahead of the execution. A large number of law enforcement agency members including RAB and police were deployed.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Tafazzul Islam Wednesday morning dismissed the killers’ review petitions, clearing the way of executing the convicts in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case.

On November 19 last year, the Supreme Court in its verdict confirmed capital punishment of 12 former army officers including the five.

Of the 12 condemned convicts of the case, one has died while six others are on the run.

The six fugitives are Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haq Dalim, Noor Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury, Mazed and Risaldar Moslem Uddin.

The Bangladesh government has started a diplomatic campaign to bring the fugitive killers back home. The government also contacted with the Interpol in this connection.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members, except his two daughters - incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who were fortunately abroad at the time -- were killed in the military putsch on August 15, 1975.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a Bengali politician and the founding leader of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, generally considered in the country as the father of the Bengali nation.

He headed the Awami League, served as the first President of Bangladesh and later became its prime minister. He is popularly referred to as Sheikh Mujib, and with the honorary title of Bangabandhu.
